If you are in the market for a decent bicycle, the secondhand marketplaces can be full of great deals. The most common reason why people sell their bikes is usually that they are upgrading to a better model or sometimes a different size. The problem you may face is the secondhand marketplaces are also full of fakes, stolen bikes, or bikes that are completely worn out. The trick is to spot the bargains amongst the junk.
One approach to take when buying a secondhand bicycle is to think like an antiques dealer. If you ever watch the antique or pawnbroker programmes on TV you will see they always try to establish two things when evaluating an item. The will want to know:
- The items providence
- Does the patina or wear on the item match the story
When you view a secondhand bike online or if you go to view one, check the story behind it before you check the bike. Stories like the bike was an unwanted gift or prize should raise a red flag. If the reason for selling is due to upgrading or even that the bike is the wrong size, this is more believable.
Ask if the bike was used in sportive events or races. The idea is to get them talking about their cycling interests.
